Read the Case study Patty: “Even Though She’s His Mom, I Will Never Leave Him.” Patty’s story exemplifies the complexities of identity, disability, power, and advocacy. Patty identifies as a Black Hispanic woman, who has officially adopted her 7-year-old grandson, Richard, who has Williams syndrome, a rare genetic condition that produces multiple health and developmental challenges. Patty’s daughter, Richard’s mother, struggles with mental illness. Patty describes how challenging it has been to find the appropriate school, health, and community support for Richard, including advocates for a holistic approach in his educational program. While she accepts Richard’s categorization of intellectual disability (ID), she questions its meaning, how others perceive it, and, moreover, how people value those who have been labeled with ID.
