Discussion question: low culture in high art | ARTS AND APPRECIATION

The so-called “Low art” or “low culture” includes popular music, tattoo art, graffiti, and kitsch.  Art critics maintain that these are sentimental works usually viewed as tasteless decoration. However, these forms from popular culture have found their way into the works of contemporary artists such as Jeff  Koons and Takashi Murakami. If you agree that low culture is sentimental and tasteless, do you believe that it should it be the subject of high art? What do you think the viewer might gain from experiencing the low culture as high art? Be sure that you first view the modern art video found in this week’s materials.
