The events in Charlottesville in the summer of 2017 were disturbing on many levels. For one thing, they evoked memories of Nazi rallies, as shown in Leni Riefenstahls (in)famous film Triumph of the Will. Also, President Trumps remarks seemed to many to assume a moral equivalence between the neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan demonstrators and the Antifa protesters who were resisting the neo-Nazis. Most important from the perspective of this course, the American Civil Liberties Union defended the right of the neo-Nazis and KKK members to march on First Amendment grounds, even though it could be argued that they represented a clear and present danger to peace and security especially since many of them were armed (as permitted under Virginia law) and engaged in what has been called hate speech.
Make the best argument that you can (a) for the right of the neo-Nazis and KKK members to march in Charlottesville and (b) against their right to march, and indicate which side you agree with. Cite relevant Supreme Court cases in your discussion. Your essay should be the equivalent of 4 typed double-spaced pages, or around 1200 words.
