Choose an ethical issue you think has political importance. (Remember we started the semester discussing the difference between ethical and legal – there is overlap but not everything ethical is legal and vice versa.)
Find out WHO had the power in our government to change that issue. You must find a local representative (you cannot write the president).
Write a letter to that elected official that:
(A) Details the issue (a few sentences in your first paragraph…you might start out like "I am writing today to bring X to your attention.)
(B) Provide an argument with three premises for why your issue is legal and shouldn’t be or is illegal or should be.
(C) Provide your elected official with "action items" for what you’d like done.
You must hand in your letter here. I urge you to also send it to your official, but you need not to for credit. This should be formatted like a letter (so look that up if you don’t know how to format a letter). It should be around 1 page single-spaced. You will get partial credit for "phoning it in" (so if you say something like: Mr. President, I think teenagers should be able to drink. My three reasons are…You should just make a law." What’s wrong with that? First, you can’t write the president. Second, the president can’t just make a law – you’ll need to do some research to see what the solution to your problem could be.)
