Each student will create a 5-10 minute podcast episode on an agreed upon topic with the Professor. This assignment is meant to be opportunity for exploration of African American Studies whereby a topic/focus is brainstormed and programmed into a mini discussion based on the concepts introduced in the materials of the course. It is encouraged to explore the podcast examples below, they are great resources to help model structure. Dig deep. Have fun and be creative! Participation in the recorded episode will be graded as follows:
Each of the following criteria is graded between 0 (poorly done) to 5 (excellent, above expectations) for a total out of 25 points:
The learning outcomes for the In Focus Podcast assignment are the following: (1) expose students to African American stories in the news, (2) explore the ways that African American and Diaspora experiences are expressed through art, literature, news, and digital media (3) link these stories to historical developments as expressed in the module materials and (4) to communicate (orally, and as a group) the story and the African American studies concepts linked to the story. Podcasts are an exciting way to communicate historical and contemporary realities of African American experiences and can be an effective tool in helping to find a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary field.
